TL;DR
We asked five of the top personal trainers at The Workout Network in the City of London the key to sustainable weight loss, and they all said the same thing:
Create a consistent calorie deficit.
Prioritise strength training.
Eat nutrient-dense, high-protein foods.
Be patient, not perfect.
Build habits that fit your lifestyle.
Whether you're training in the City of London or online, real results come from simple principles done well and consistently.

After more than a decade working as a personal trainer in the City of London, I’ve had countless conversations about weight loss, what works, what doesn’t, and why so many people find it so difficult to sustain.
I decided to put that question to the test and ask five of the best coaches I know, trainers at The Workout Network, for their honest answer to a question we get all the time: What’s the key to losing weight and keeping it off?
Their answers were refreshingly aligned. No fads. No gimmicks. Just hard earned insight from years of coaching busy professionals in the heart of London. Here’s what we found.
It Starts With Simplicity
Jack Regan, never one to overcomplicate things, summed it up with two words: “Energy balance 😂.” Behind the joke is the truth that underpins all successful fat loss. You must burn more calories than you consume. Sounds simple.
But that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
I’ve always believed the same. Weight loss is straightforward, but applying it consistently, especially when life is full of stress, long hours, and social pressure, is another story. That's why patience and self-compassion are crucial. You can’t hate yourself into better habits. You have to build them with kindness and time.
Indi Rajpal agreed, highlighting the importance of creating a calorie deficit either through nutrition or training but doing it with intention. “The calories need to come from nutrient-dense food,” & “the process has to be sustainable. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.”
Prioritise Strength
A common mistake we see is an over reliance on cardio. Yes, cardio burns calories. But strength training builds and preserves lean muscle, which keeps your metabolism working in your favour, especially as you age. The truth is that we believe strength training should form the foundation.
“Choosing strength training over hours of cardio makes all the difference,” said Indi. It supports your metabolism, helps you retain lean muscle, and sets you up for long-term success.
Jake built on this: “People overlook the role of protein in maintaining lean muscle mass”.
This is a core part of our philosophy at The Workout Network. Whether our clients train with us in person here in the City of London or follow a remote programme, we prioritise strength, not just as a fitness goal, but as a mindset.
Consistency Is King
Everyone wants quick results. However, the most successful clients we’ve coached are those who not only lose weight but also keep it off, and these are the ones who learn to prioritise consistency over intensity.
Jake said it best: “Long-term weight loss means finding an approach that works around your lifestyle and being consistent with it.”
This is especially true for the busy professionals we work with in London. People who travel for work, entertain clients, and live fast-paced lives. An all-or-nothing approach simply doesn’t hold. What works is building flexible habits that fit your reality.
And that means letting go of perfection. “Quick fixes only lead to long-term setbacks,” Indi reminded me.
The Mind Matters
While everyone touched on the importance of mindset, Lefteris put it into words in a way that resonated deeply: “Knowing isn’t doing. The mind decides whether you wake up for the workout. It decides whether you binge or breathe through the craving.”
It’s a powerful reminder that weight loss is not just physical, it’s psychological. You can have the best meal plan in the world, but if you beat yourself up over every slip-up or if you treat discipline as punishment, it won’t last.
As trainers, we’re not just coaching reps and macros—we’re helping people unlearn years of negative self-talk around food, exercise, and body image. That kind of transformation takes inner work as much as outer effort.
The Approach Has to Fit You
Ultimately, what tied all our conversations together was this: the most effective weight loss strategy is the one you can consistently adhere to. It’s not about the perfect plan, it’s about a realistic one.
At The Workout Network, we design personal training programmes around people’s actual schedules, responsibilities, and stress levels. That’s especially important here in the City of London, where time is tight and pressure is high.
Final Thoughts
What was clear when talking to these experienced trainers was that they all agreed on what causes weight loss to occur. The creation and consistency of a calorie deficit. But, after that, it becomes much more personal, and helping you understand what will work for you is our job.
If you’re ready to stop chasing quick fixes and start building lasting results, we’d love to help. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to break through a plateau, our team at The Workout Network is here to guide you.
